Roy’s Big Burger, Richmond VA

If you enjoy a tasty dashboard buffet, then Roy’s Big Burger is a place not to miss! This is a hamburger stand that has been serving hamburgers since they cost 35 cents. There is no dining room, just a walk up window. The food is prepared to order in front of you. The menu is simple – hamburgers, hotdogs, fried bologna, french fries, and onion rings. For the adventurous, try the BAMA Stinger – a burger loaded with Jalapeno peppers, grilled onions, and dripping with cheese sauce. The hot dog with chili, onions, and mustard is a classic (but, a little messy, to be sure!).

The food is excellent, servers are very attentive and informative, the interior is decorated like a seafood place should be, the prices are very reasonable, and the portions are very filling! In short, you will be stepping back in time to the almost gone era of quality family restaurants. You will not leave here hungry! First, they bring you a basket of hot, sweet corn fritters heaped with powdered sugar. And, they keep bringing them until you are quite stuffed, yet you cannot stop eating these delectable bites of goodness! One of the foods they have is Rock Shrimp, which has a unique flavor. If you have never had them before, follow the server’s advice and have them broiled in order to enjoy all the flavor! The soups and chowders are delicious, too, and should definitely be sampled. If you can find room, be sure to try the Key Lime Pie, sweet and tangy and creamy and cool – it does not get much better than this!

El Leoncito sits on old Route 10 perched on the edge of the Indian River, its picture windows perfectly framing the Kennedy Space Center shuttle launch pad. The food is a combination of Cuban and Mexican favorites and it is all delicious, from the chips and home-made salsa to the enchiladas to the Cuban sandwiches. When you cannot eat another bite, be sure to check out the amazing wall of celebrity autographs and the pictures of a nighttime shuttle launch featuring the fire plume of the shuttle from the vantage point of the quirky neon plastic palm tree that graces El Leoncito.

The Trellis, Williamsburg VA

The Trellis has been a Williamsburg tradition for over 30 years. Located on historic Duke of Gloucester Street with its well dressed windows filled with beautifully set tables, this has long been the place to go for special occasions. It is the place to go for innovative meals featuring local ingredients, like the New England Clam Chowder made with Littleneck Clams, or the stuffed trout or the red pepper soup. It is also the place to go for chocolate. The piece de resistance is Death By Chocolate, featuring seven layers of wonderfully decadent chocolate, from the slightly crispy chocolate meringue to the chocolate mousse to the rich, dark ganache that surrounds it all, this is the chocolate dessert that you will savor and remember and come back to again and again whenever you are in Williamsburg.

Try the Famous House Special – a combination of the Meat-Eaters Delight and the Veggie- 10 toppings piled on a thick crust and covered in cheese! The Italian Sausage with extra cheese is also a great choice. Or, try a bacon cheeseburger with thick, hot fries or a classic Greek salad chocked full of Feta and black olives. Either way, it is the perfect choice for a busy school night dinner.
